Shipyards & Dry Dock Facilities
The nation relies on the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard for ocean-based security operations near the U.S. and overseas. These agencies, in turn, rely on shipyards to ensure that their boats and vessels are kept in top form.
Collins’ team of skilled and experienced engineers has provided shipyard engineering support for most of our company history. Services include both structural condition assessments and control inspections of floating dry docks, graving docks, and caisson docks. These inspections are necessary to ensure that the dry dock facilities are kept in safe working order and can support their rated operations.
Non-destructive testing to measure in-situ material thicknesses is routinely provided. Collins’ structural engineering staff also regularly provides waterfront structural assessments around dry dock facilities, both above and below water. Design of mooring hardware connections, fender systems, and the rehabilitation of shipyard bulkheads and piers are among typical services provided to working shipyard facilities. Collins designs and load rates other shipyard structures, including work platforms, vehicular and pedestrian bridges, and utility supports.
